Muarizio Di Iorio
Background
Maurizio Di Iorio was born in Pescara, a town in Central Italy. Maurizio went and studied Law at university, later working as a copywriter in advertising. While working in advertising, he discovered a passion for photography and portraiture. He switched professions and bought himself a camera in 2009. Maurizio is a self-taught photographer and has been full-time since 2011. For only being a photographer for few years, Maurizio has produced an impressive body of work. He has attracted many clients such as GQ USA, Wall Street Journal, and Men's Health USA.
Style
Maurizio's style of photography is different with others with not tring to express a perspective or story but rather presenting everyday objects in "objective photographs," as he calls it. His use of bright colors and contrast brings a new meaning and significance to ordinary, everyday objects. His photography also has a more modern art-style allowing for the subject in his photos to pop out. In many of his images, he uses a singular-colored background to either contrast or compliment the subjects. Maurizio in many of his still life photos uses subjects that are related to each other or completely different. For example, one image of his has many cigarette butts and beer bottles which are similar, where as another one has a tangerine orange and an egg which can be seen as unrelated. He not only contrasts with colors, but also with themes.
Philosophy
Maurizio is different with his work and doesn't want to send a message with his photographs. He presents objects of everyday use with aesthetic expressivity and wants people to identify these objects for what they are, and not what they mean. He focuses on the relation between objects and human beings. As he puts it, "I prefer an aesthetic truth and I reject any form of idealization." With his work in advertising, Maurizio focuses on how objects influences the lives of people and the endless consuming of products. His philosophy of avoiding meaning and a story within his work gives him an approach to focus more on the details of the objects.
Influences
After taking a look at Maurizio Di Iorio's work, it has influenced my mindset when taking/editing photos and what I truly like within photography. Maurizio has influenced me to add more brightness and contrast to my photos to make it pop out more. Looking at his work also gave me an urge to go back to my still lifes and reshoot to compose the object relation more as Maurizio tends to do. With my personal taste and view in photography, he has influenced me to gain liking for simplistic, modern photos. Maurizio has a way of taking simple photos that have a certain modern, bright look that I now find more interesting.
For similaritites between the two, both have similar of subjects a kumquat with a stem and the same model of the Macbook. Both also have same general look and composure. For differences, the size of the main subect (kumquat) is larger in my photo, the lighting is different with my keyboard keys casting a shadow. Also the background of the photo with the "Macbook Pro" in my recreation is less focused leaving it slightly blurred.
I personally feel like this was my best recreation out of the three. The cracking pattern is similar in location, the color of the egg is similar, and the tape is also in the same location (I even tried to add the uneven fold on the left side of the tape). For differences, the blue background are different shades, and the shadow on Maurizio's is on the left while mine is bottom-right.
The general arrangement and composure of the two are very similar. These two have many more differences. The lighting direction is different so the shadows are cast differently. The shape of the spoon and strawberries are different. The color of all the subjects and background seem to be a bit different.
Personal Artist Statement
In general, I feel like my recreations accurately represented Maurizio's intent within his photographs and his work. Trying to capture less of a story and more of an aesthetic expression in my images is what I really aimed for. Being able to follow Maurizio's philosophy was a main goal for me and I believe I acheived that. I faced challenges on the way with less advanced and technology. I believe for most of the photographs Maurizio took were within a well lit studio with much better cameras. With the disadvantage, I feel like met Maurizio's philosophy and overall I enjoyed setting up the scene, making little adjustments, and editing the photos to make the best recreation I could.
